A Gift from TanoRiver.com to the World
The Rivers, Lakes & Lagoons Collective is a global gift from TanoRiver.com — honoring the sacred, endangered waters of Akan land and beyond.
From the Tano and Bia Rivers to Lake Bosomtwe, the Bandama, and coastal lagoons, we document the stories, myths, threats, and beauty of rivers and lakes across Africa and the world.
Join us in restoring memory, culture, and ecological justice — one sacred water at a time.
💧 Because Water Is Memory. Water Is Spirit. Water Must Be Protected.
From the sacred source of the Tano River in Ghana to the sprawling wetlands of the Amazon, from Africa’s deepest lakes to the smallest urban lagoons—water bodies around the world are dying. They are polluted, redirected, over-mined, disrespected.
And yet, these rivers, lakes, and lagoons are the veins of the Earth. They carry life, history, culture, and soul.
TanoRiver.com, originally created to honor the endangered Tano River and its spiritual siblings in Akan land, now extends its mission to the entire world. We offer this platform as a tribute, a call to action, and a cultural archive:
The Rivers, Lakes & Lagoons Collective
An evolving library of sacred waters and threatened ecosystems
🌊 What Is This Collective?
The Rivers, Lakes & Lagoons Collective is an open-ended global initiative to:
- Celebrate the cultural, ecological, and spiritual significance of the world’s great water bodies
- Document their stories, threats, and myths
- Amplify the voices of local communities, elders, activists, and youth fighting to protect them
- Reclaim the sacredness of water in a time of crisis
- Create a global archive of water wisdom and resistance
It is our way of saying:
The story of one river is the story of us all.
📚 What You’ll Discover
For each river, lake, or lagoon in the collective, we’ll publish a dedicated feature including:

- ⛔ Modern Threats (mining, pollution, industrial use, climate stress)
- 💚 Ongoing or needed conservation efforts
- 🗣 Voices from the community
- 📢 Call to action and solidarity
🌐 Who Is It For?
This is for:
- Local communities fighting to protect their rivers
- Youth and students seeking to reconnect with ancestral water wisdom
- Environmental researchers and cultural historians
- Members of the diaspora seeking healing and reconnection
- Artists, storytellers, and educators reclaiming the voice of water
🧭 Where We Started — and What We Continue
This project was born in Akan land, where rivers like Tano, Bia, Pra, Birim, and lakes like Bosomtwe are personified as gods, siblings, judges, and healers.
We will continue to honor:
- The original Akan rivers and lakes
- The waters of Ghana, Côte d’Ivoire, and West Africa
- And now, expand outward—toward global sacred waters
Every river we feature becomes part of a larger conversation:
About climate justice, ancestral memory, and the fight to save the soul of the Earth.
✨ Join the Collective
If you know a river or lake or lagoon under threat—tell us its story.
If you hold cultural knowledge about a sacred waterbody—share it.
If you are fighting for a wetland or mangrove—let us amplify your voice.
Together, we are the collective memory of the waters.
And together, we can protect them.
