🔎 Scientific Name: Tetrapleura tetraptera

Common names: Prekese (Twi – Ghana), Aidan fruit (English), Essèssè (Baoulé), Aridan (Yoruba), 4-cornered fruit
Family: Fabaceae (legume family)

📍 Natural Habitat and Distribution

Native to the tropical forests of West Africa, Tetrapleura tetraptera is commonly found in:

  • Semi-deciduous forests
  • Rainforest edges
  • Sacred groves and village woodlands
  • Riverine forests near the Tano River, especially in Ghana’s Western and Ahafo Regions

Its natural range includes parts of Côte d’Ivoire, making it a key species in the ethnobotanical landscape of the Tano River Basin.

🌿 Botanical Description

  • Height: Grows as a small to medium-sized tree, 10–25 meters
  • Leaves: Compound and feathery (bipinnate)
  • Flowers: Greenish-yellow with a sweet scent
  • Fruit: Long, hard, brown pod with four longitudinal ridges (giving it the name “tetra-pleura”)
  • Aroma: Strongly spicy and sweet when dried

The fruit is highly aromatic and widely recognized in local markets across Ghana and Côte d’Ivoire.

🌍 Ecological Role

  • Grows in mixed forest zones, contributing to biodiversity
  • The tree improves soil nitrogen through its legume root system
  • Pods attract insects and foraging animals when they fall to the ground
  • Often planted near homes for shade, medicine, and rituals

🍲 Culinary and Medicinal Uses

Prekese is a beloved ingredient and healer in Akan and other West African cultures.

🍵 Culinary Use

  • Pods are broken and added to soups and stews
  • Imparts a sweet, spicy aroma and is often used in light soup, palm nut soup, and pepper soup
  • Sometimes boiled for flavored tea or beverages

🌿 Medicinal Uses

  • Decoctions made from pods or bark are used to treat:
    • Fever and malaria
    • High blood pressure
    • Postpartum recovery
    • Coughs and inflammation
    • Diabetes management
  • The tree is also used in steam baths and cleansing rituals in traditional medicine

🧙🏾‍♂️ Cultural and Spiritual Significance

  • Pods are used in ritual purification, especially in river-based ceremonies
  • Hung in homes or placed near shrines to ward off evil spirits
  • Included in libation rituals along rivers like the Tano
  • Known in some traditions as a “spiritual cleanser”

The connection to river deities like Ta Kora in Ghana may include offerings of aromatic plants like Prekese.

⚠️ Conservation Status

  • Not currently endangered
  • However, at risk from:
    • Overharvesting in some areas
    • Forest clearing for agriculture or mining
    • Loss of traditional knowledge among youth

🌱 Why It Matters for the Tano River

Tetrapleura tetraptera embodies the harmony between:

  • Nature and medicine
  • Culture and cuisine
  • Ritual and river ecology

In the Tano Basin, Prekese is a natural treasure — one that connects kitchens, forests, and ancestral wisdom.
